A New Theory of the Self with Bayo Akomolafe and Indy Johar

One might argue that the heart of modern civilization, its supreme fetish, is the notion of the individual. The independent self. The liberal rationalist self. Cut off from ecological relations, pixelated within a flattened space designed for human social experiments, the individual crystallizes modern notions of linear time, political projects around identity, anthropocentric ideas about agency, and specific inoculatory notions of care and wellbeing.

Join us on January 19, 2023 (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM PST / 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM CET) for the Democracy & Belonging Forum's next event in the ongoing series the Edges in the Middle, where Indy Johar of Dark Matter Labs and Global Senior Fellow Bayo Akomolafe will explore a set of questions about the self: what if the self is not as estranged or as independent as we often suppose it is? If we are to take seriously notions of entanglement and ecological imbrications, how do we come to see identity? What might this mean for democracy, for our understanding of our roles as temporality-makers (instead of just inhabitants of fixed, monolithic time), for the Anthropocene, and for the future?
